"The more we sweat in peace the less we bleed in war."

"Education is not merely a means for earning a living or an instrument for the acquisition of wealth. It is an initiation into life of spirit, a training of the human soul in the pursuit of truth and the practice of virtue."

--Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit

Focus:
The focus of this segment will be "beginning".
The Roots of the yoga tradition, the commencement of spiritual practice and the role of the teacher as spiritual aspirant (sadhaka). The difference between a yogi(ni) and Sadhaka(m). The instruction will look to the importance of self-study (svadhyaya), and its many meanings for teachers who wish to inspire students.
Svadhyaya. Self-study. The process of inquiring into your own nature, the nature of your beliefs, and the nature of the world's spiritual journey (one of the niyamas).  Svadhyaya involves developing of cognitive understanding of intuitive knowledge. It also means to clearly understand the underlying spiritual meaning of the world's great scriptures.  Svadhyaya: Sva means "self' or "belonging to me." Adhyaya means "inquiry" or "examination". The word Svadhyaya literally means, "to get close to something." It means to get close to yourself, that is, to study yourself so you might understand your place/identity as a teacher.
How does one go about beginning the serious aspiration to teach, find their voice, and encourage the beginning of serious study in their students? This speaks to our desire to allow the "organic" and "creative" process of teaching to develop. This in turn will be equated to the "organic" process of learning for their students. Knowing who you are and what you can and want to teach is a beginning. We will use the Bagavad Gita throughout this 500 hour course, exploring the relevance of this literature for the modern reader. In this segment the teachers will see how they identify with characters and situations in the Gita. This use of a single literature will provide depth of focus and continuity in the training, and will aim to show teachers how they can draw philosophy and ethics into their class instruction through various sources.
Optional Readings for 500 Course:
Yoga in Modern India. Alan Alter
First There was a Mountain. Elizabeth Kadetsky
Positioning Yoga. Sarah Strauss
The Body Has Its Reasons. Therese Bertherat

EDWARD CLARK, Tripsichore Yoga | (www.tripsichore.com)
Edward Clark began studying yoga in 1979. He is the creator of Tripsichore yoga Theatre, and noteworthy among his teachers are Narayani and Giris Rabinovitch, but he confesses huge admiration for the Ashtanga Vinyasa, Sivananda, Iyengar and Viniyoga practices. He fuses his keen artistic vision with a deep understanding of the essential pursuit of yoga practice. With one foot in dance, one foot in Ashtanga and Sivananda he has synthesized the use of breath, asana, choreography and philosophy. His classes are entertaining, demanding and exhilarating.
Based in London, England, "Tripsichore Yoga Theatre" is one of the most extraordinary movement innovations to emerge from the yoga discipline. This contemplative style of movement theatre is a sensual exploration of spirituality that unites the mind and the body. The breath guides the body through a safe, fluid flow of postures that creates stunningly spectacular visual poetry. It is both a fun and an orthodox practice that respects the technical and safe aspects of traditional yoga.
LAURIE GREENE, PhD, E-RYT, YBR | Yoga Nine Studios (Smithville & L.B.I. )
A PhD in anthropology, Laurie has practiced yoga since age 15, having grown up in a "yoga family". Since then, yoga has become her healthy addiction. Always an enthusiastic student, Laurie combines her training in a variety of classical "hatha" traditions, bringing insights and techniques from all these to her eclectic teaching and practice. Training extensively in the Iyengar tradition, emphasis is on safety, technique and proper alignment so that students will get the greatest benefits from their practice, and easily experience the joy that yoga affords every fitness level. Laurie is also certified in Vinyasa flow and is registered with the Yoga Alliance as an "experienced teacher" and trainer. Her continuing exploration of classical and newer interpretations of Astanga Vinyasa have led her to study with many amazing teachers; and to all of them she is forever grateful. The studio has become a place where many of these and new teachers gather and continue to inspire. Having completed her 500 hour certification with the wonderful Edward Clark & Elizabeth Connelly, Laurie's passion lies in blending many styles into a practice that is instructive, creative and fun. By all accounts, Laurie is is married to the greatest man that has ever graced this earth (Joe), and they are the proud parents of three "grown" children (XOXO).
