All yoga is designed to help us grow more centered and serene, more compassionate; more comfortable with ourselves and more loving with all other beings. Good health and physical fitness are side benefits of many schools of Yoga. The difference is only in technique.
BhavaYoga has the deepest respect for all yoga traditions.
In Vinyasa Yoga, movement is intimately linked to the breath. With the breath, we build inner heat, concentrate our focus and energies and
monitor our practice for a healthy balance of effort and grace. The Asana (physical aspect, or poses) practice is intended to be challenging in order to reach and grow beyond our perceived limitations and become more compassionate with the struggles of others.
At its best, Vinyasa Yoga may combine the discipline and focus on the breath found in Ashtanga
Yoga; the flexibility & heat-building aspects of Power Yoga; the precision
& alignment of Iyengar Yoga; and the meditative, restorative
& spiritual dimensions found in the Kripalu, Sivananda and Integral traditions. This is what
Peter tries to bring to his teaching of Bhava Vinyasa Yoga.

|
|
The name, Bhava,
comes from the Sanskrit word for "being" and being fully present and being divine are just a few of its inspirational implications.
|
|
Bhava Vinyasa is distinguished by attention to alignment and thoughtful sequencing of poses, which promote ease, grace and safety at all levels; and by providing generous, hands-on assistance with alignment and breath instruction to all students throughout the entire course of class.
Emphasis is on:
-
self-discipline and exploration through a challenging asana practice
-
very deep, even breathing
-
a gentle, nurturing environment which includes plenty of time for relaxation and sometimes meditation.
With the Bhava Vinyasa practice, we
cultivate our inner and outer health and equanimity. You will become simultaneously more energized and more rested, serenely able to balance effort and grace in your life as in your practice.
Bhava Vinyasa is also inextricably linked with the tradition of yoga philosophy, and spiced with many other spiritual traditions, such as Sufism, Buddhism and Wicca. At the same time,
it is completely committed to providing a non-dogmatic and non-religious space in which to explore your whole self. Thus, while
there may be readings from spiritual texts, or link such insights with the practice in class, you will never be preached to or told what to believe.

Peter
Rizzo
A student of yoga since 1987, Peter Rizzo has been teaching yoga since the early nineties. He was certified at the 500- and 200-hour levels at Jivamukti Yoga with Sharon Gannon and David Life in 1997.
In 1999, Peter opened Bhava Yoga Center in New York City. Bhava served the East Village Yoga community with a unique and substantial mix of classes. These classes were offered at low prices in a supportive and genial atmosphere, made possible by the very rare approach of running a yoga center administered by yogic principles.
Bhava was relocated to Vermont in 2003 where Peter continues to lead intelligently sequenced yoga classes. Peter also offers free teacher training to groups of students at Bhava, his retreat center located just north of the studio, and in classes he teaches in Northampton, Massachusetts and New York City. He also provides private, one-on-one teacher training. Over the years, many Bhava-trained teachers have moved onto teach in other parts of the world where they work independently and freely at the art and science of yoga.
In his own practice and teaching philosophy, Peter combines the breath and physical intensity of Ashtanga, the rigorous alignment of Iyengar, the rare humanity of Desikachar, and his own innate intelligence and creativity. The result is the opposite of yoga as the formulaic business model that is so popular the western world―easy-answers-to-easy-questions. Instead, it brings a focused investigation into knowledge of our essential being. |
