 In Sanskrit, Usha means "dawn, awakening, a new beginning." It is also the name of Reema's late grandmother, who had mastered one of yoga's core teachings 

- maintaining a serene mind in the midst of activity.

Ayurvedic Cooking Workshop $60 - Fri (11/21) 6pm-9pm
Learn how to create Indian meals with Ayurvedic consciousness! Ayurveda is the science behind Yoga. The Art of Cooking tasty and healthy food is central to this ancient holistic approach to ultimate well-being. Reema will begin the workshop with a brief talk on Ayurvedic nutrition, the healing properties of major spices, and how to become familiar with your constitution in order to create a diet that works specifically for you. Then, you will learn how to cook delicately spiced lentils, light and tasty vegetables, fragrant rice and a nutritious and delicious dessert. Yum. You will also learn how to make chai, yogurt and ghee from scratch. This is nothing like what you eat in an Indian restaurant! Recipes will be handed out! 
   All of the ingredients used in the workshop are bought from local markets and stores, so don't fret! You can showcase your new skills at home for your friends and family with easy to find ingredients and easy to follow recipes.

Kriyas & Asana $45 - Sat (11/22) noon - 3pm | Smithville Studio
In this afternoon 8-limb vinyasa flow, Reema will cover some of the most important exercises in hatha yoga, which are rarely taught! This includes Nauli Kriya and various Pranayama sequences The session will also include a dynamic, challenging and meditative sequence of asana followed by mantra and meditation.

Time with these breathing techniques will take your Asana and Meditation practice to new heights. Drawing on the teachings of Krishnamacharya, B.K.S. Iyengar and B.N.S Iyengar, Reema emphasizes the use of Bandhas (internal energy locks) during the Pranayama exercises. What you learn in this session is a lifetime practice. You will learn how to gently incorporate pranayama in your current practice and also how to intensify it as your lung capacity and concentration grow. The afternoon will include a discussion on the essence of the Vedas and Bhagavad Gita. Reema will also lead us through several Sanskrit Chants, introducing us to her debut album, Truth Love Creation. Reema has been teaching Yoga and Ayurveda internationally since 2002. Her first teachers of Ayurveda were her Grandmothers and she is certified as an Ayurvedic therapist from the Indus Valley Ayurvedic Center in Mysore, India. She has taught in Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Japan, South Africa, Tanzania, Brazil, and throughout Europe and North America. 

Reema Datta is a classically trained musician whose voice is blended with the ancient sounds of India including the bansuri, tabla and sitar. A unique collaboration of relaxing, meditative songs her debut album, Truth Love Creation is full of love for the sacred and a desire to share the utter beauty and relaxation that comes when uniting with the divine.

Reema began teaching yoga in 2002. She teaches vinyasa, pranayama, philosophy and ayurvedic cooking worldwide. She thanks her greatest influences - her family, Danny Paradise, Dharma Mittra, Larry Schultz, and the numerous great yogis she has practiced with throughout the world, each dedicated to sharing the healing and empowering practice with as many as possible.

Reema is co-author of the book, Sacred Sanskrit Words for Yoga, Chant and Meditation (available on www.amazon.com). She recently completed a CD of Sanskrit Chants, produced with Ferenz Kallos. (available through info@ushayogafoundation.org)

Reema has taught throughout Europe, Asia, Africa and North America with Danny Paradise (www.dannyparadise.com). Throughout their travels, Reema spread the message of the Usha Yoga Foundation, which brings yoga to those who have little or no access to the practice - either in remote areas of the world or in battered women's shelters, drug rehab centers, nursing homes, hospitals and slums. The Usha Foundation is a 501c3 organization and supports projects in India, Indonesia, Kenya, South Africa, England and the U.S. Danny has helped organize music benefits for Usha in over 10 cities around the world.

Prior to her travels, Reema worked with Larry Schultz and Katie Cariffe at It's Yoga, San Francisco, where she developed teacher training programs and produced a CD with Sanskrit Chants and a guide on how to pronounce the Sanskrit names of the postures and terminology that fall under Ashtanga Yoga. Reema studied International Affairs at Vassar College and The London School of Economics (M.A.). She also worked for the United Nations in New York. Reema enjoys using her experience to run the Usha Yoga Foundation and to explore the process of building empowerment from within. She conducts annual retreats to her grandfather's community center in Khaknar, a tribal village in Central North India.
